Our trip to Maine

Maine was beautiful, even in the dead of winter, which means it only gets better in spring, summer and fall. We had a great and eventful trip. Colin's interview went well and although we did not get accepted this year we loved the opportunity to see the University of New England and its quaint setting among old houses, churches, shops and parks along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The people in Maine were so friendly and welcoming. We ate a lot of seafood, walked around the Old Port of Portland which had tons of unique shops that were so fun to browse, saw the Portland lighthouse, drove along the coast, went to a charming town called Freeport to their outdoor outlet mall which reminded me of downtown Danville. We found Target the first day we were there and bought a half gallon of milk and a box of cereal because we are cereal addicts. It was so funny because we didn't have a refrigerator in our hotel room and had some leftover milk that we weren't sure what to do with so Colin hung it out the window overnight. The next morning the milk was frozen solid, it is bitter cold there! We took a day trip to Boston and walked the Freedom Trail which is a several mile path that winds you through all the historical sites of Boston, visited the Museum of Science, and enjoyed the views of the bustling harbor. I loved Boston and was so happy to have had the opportunity to see it. Next time I will go back in the summer though. Maine was the most gorgeous, charming, picturesque place I have ever seen, rich with history. If you ever get the chance to go, take it!

"Breath Easy, You're in Maine" This was the first sign we saw when we got off the plane in the Portland Airport. We thought it was significant because we where bracelets that say "Breath Easy. Cure Cystic Fibrosis"

This is the Fort Williams Portland Lighthouse in the winter. Burrrrrr! It was so cold and windy that we only got out of the car to take a picture of us.

This is just a picture of us at the lighthouse (same as above) that portrays how freezing it was!

We took this picture outside of Wilbur's Candy Shop in Freeport. All of the shops were in cute, old brick houses. It was charming!

We ate at Gilbert's Chowder house that had some of the best clam chowder we've ever had. Colin is munching on crab legs, mussels and I had a lobster roll-yummy!

Lenny, the world's only life-sized chocolate moose, made of 1700 lbs of milk chocolate!

A snapshot of the harbor in Boston along the Freedom Trail

It took us 2-3 hours to walk the Freedom Trail and we saw Paul Revere's house, Bunker Hill, Little Italy, many churches, parks and other historical sites. It was cold but well worth the effort.

It looks like so much fun! I want to go to Maine. It's cool how the east coast feels rich with history compared to the west coast, and even that is fairly new compared to the rest of the world.
